In italian 'mani in fede' meaning "hands in faith" usually describes two hands and a heart, in this case the heart is concealed inside of the band, for the wearer's eyes only. The band of braided hair, a reminder of everlasting love and mortality. The fede ring has been a popular symbol of betrothal as early as the 3rd century.
